Electronic paper display module is actually a new technology with more than 20 years of development history so far. Electronic paper display (EPD) has many properties such as ultra-low power consumption, image sensitive paper, sunlight visible, zero power consumption during normal operation, no blue eyes, light transmission and ultra wide angle due to its three main technical features of bistability, reflection and flexibility. With the development of the Internet of Things, the size of e-paper ranges from centimetres to metres, and the products mentioned today are widely used in various scenarios and fields. In addition, the research direction of e-paper module is mainly from two aspects. One is to make displays like paper, i.e. "liquid crystal" or "electrophoretic" electronic displays. The other is to make the paper look like a display and change the content, i.e. "rewritable paper".

The low-energy, environmentally friendly e-paper module is no longer the preserve of e-books. Today, e-paper applications can be found in smart watches and electronic luggage tags. It can even be applied to cars so that you can have a different kind of car at all times. However, considering its advantages and disadvantages, manufacturers are exploring more scenarios for e-paper applications. For example, low-power smartwatches are being replaced by ink screens. In this case, the fast power consumption problem of OLED screen smartwatches could be solved. In addition, its thin and light nature can make the watch lighter and less burdensome to wear. As a result, sports smartwatches with e-paper displays have a unique advantage in terms of visibility in sunlight compared to ordinary sports smartwatches on the market, thanks to their reflective technology. Whether in direct sunlight or in a swimming pool, the data on the wrist is clearly visible. In this case, the brightness of the screens of conventional sports smartwatches and mobile phones is adjusted too much, and it is futile to block the sunlight with your hands. In addition, some sports watches are always in motion, which will inevitably affect power and battery life. Thanks to the unique bistable technology of the e-paper module, it offers exceptional energy efficiency.

The e-paper display module is mainly composed of the following materials:

E-paper diaphragm : This is the core material of the e-paper display module and is responsible for displaying the pattern actually seen by the human eye.

Base plate : This is the pixel electrode (lower electrode) of the e-paper display and is used to control the black and white variation of each pixel of the e-paper. There are various types of backing boards available, including PCB, FPC, TFT glass, PET, etc. Different backing boards can be selected according to the specific needs of the actual application.
The e-paper film can be laminated to the backplane.

Driver chip: It can generate the corresponding logic level and timing according to the control instruction and signal, which is used to control the working timing and status of each pixel (or segment code) of the backplane and enable the electronic paper to display the required pattern.

Transparent protective film : A polymeric plastic film that is highly impermeable to water vapour. It is laminated to the electronic paper film and the backing board to prevent water vapour from entering the electronic paper film and to prevent the electronic paper from being damaged by moisture.

Edge sealer: a special chemical glue that is applied evenly around the edges of the transparent protective film to isolate moisture. This prevents moisture from penetrating around the protective film and damaging the electronic paper film.
